Slutwalk – don’t blame the victim

June 13th, 2011 · 1 Comment · Uncategorized

There have been a wave of slut walks around the world recently; Sydney is having one today. The slut walks have evolved as a response to a security guard on a US university campus advising students not to “dress like sluts” to avoid being raped.

I see these slut walks as a welcome discussion about not blaming victims of sexual assault; the victim is not where the focus should be. Rape victims are still heavily cross-examined during court trials and asked what they were wearing.

Reminds me of how helmet laws force people on bikes to take responsibility for the dangerous behaviour of people in cars. The other similarity is that just as dressing dowdily appears to have no protective effect in preventing rape, so do bike helmets appear to have no protective effect in preventing serious head injury.
