Tragic story; therapy to change ‘feminine’ boy created a troubled man

June 16th, 2011 · No Comments · Uncategorized

This is a tragic story about a man who committed suicide at age 38 after having undergone therapy from the age of five to try and make him less feminine. His mother claimed she wanted him to have a normal life.

Assuming the mother’s motivation was as she claimed, and not the result of latent homophobia brought on by having an effeminate son, this shows how misguided people can be in trying to help children; sometimes parents worry about what their children will face from society if they are ‘not normal’ and these fears can create more problems than they solve. Building a strong, resilient sense of self so one can experience the joy of ┬ábeing comfortable in one’s own skin, despite what others might say or think, seems a much worthier goal.

At the opposite end of the spectrum are the parents who are raising their child “genderless” by not revealing its sex to anybody outside the immediate family.
